The Ratio of CBF to CMRO2 Change with Brain Activation Increases with Increasing Stimulus Amplitude in Human Visual Cortex

چکیده
Purpose: Although functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal changes provides a useful tool for mapping brain activation, a quantitative interpretation of the magnitude of the BOLD response remains problematic. The BOLD response is primarily driven by cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes, but is strongly modulated by n, the ratio of the fractional change in CBF to the change in cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO2). A number of studies have found significant regional variation of n across the brain [1,2], but variability within the same brain region for different stimuli has been relatively unexplored (with the exception of [3]). We used a calibrated BOLD method to test whether n varies with the contrast of a visual stimulus within a single brain region.

Variability of the coupling of blood flow and oxygen metabolism responses in the brain: a problem for interpreting BOLD studies but potentially a new window on the underlying neural activity
Recent studies from our group and others using quantitative fMRI methods have found that variations of the coupling ratio of blood flow (CBF) and oxygen metabolism (CMRO2) responses to a stimulus have a strong effect on the BOLD response. Across a number of studies an empirical pattern is emerging in the way CBF and CMRO2 changes are coupled to neural activation: if the stimulus is modulated to...
متن کاملAn fMRI study of human visual cortex in response to spatiotemporal properties of visual stimuli
ABSTRACT Background: The brain response to temporal frequencies (TF) has been already reported, but with no study reported for different TF with respect to various spatial frequencies (SF). Materials and Methods: fMRI was performed by 1.5T GE-system in 14 volunteers during checkerboard, with TFs of 4, 6, 8 and 10Hz in low and high SFs of 0.5 and 8cpd. Results: Average percentage BOLD signa...

O. Leontiev, R. Buxton Radiology, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA, United States Introduction The coupling of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) during brain activation can be characterized by the ratio n of the fractional CBF change to the fractional CMRO2 change. The consistent observation of the BOLD effect supports the conclusion th...
متن کاملThe absolute CBF response to activation is preserved during elevated perfusion: Implications for neurovascular coupling measures
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques in which the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) response to a neural stimulus are measured, can be used to estimate the fractional increase in the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO2) that accompanies evoked neural activity. A measure of neurovascular coupling is obtained from the ratio ...
متن کاملQuantification of CMRO2 and CBF using Simultaneous NIRS and fMRI
Introduction : We introduce an accurate technique to estimate the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) using simultaneously measured near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) fMRI signals. Owing to simultaneous acquisition of both fMRI and NIRS, separate hypercapnia condition or arterial spin labeling (ASL) acquisition are ...
